Things I’m looking forward to in May

1.

I’m looking forward to May because it’s May. It’s the loveliest month in Denmark – along with September. I adore the spring, I love when nature blossoms and I really do everything I can to enjoy it. There’s nothing better than driving out of the city and watching nature bursting forth along the roads. It makes you so happy, and I also think that it has psychological significance for us as humans to experience the days getting longer and see the green leaves unfurl. It’s a bit of a cliché, I know, but I really think it means something.

This year, unfortunately, I know a few people who passed away before spring made its appearance, and they’re very much in my thoughts. I think about how they didn’t make it to see their last spring, and I almost feel as though I owe it to them to put even more value on enjoying it. So this year I’m going to enjoy spring a little for them, too.

2.

We’ve just received the keys to a brand-new flat in Aarhus, and I’m going to be spending May decorating it and creating a lovely home there. It was a condition from the start for me and Claus that we would have two homes. That’s just how it is, and it will be that way for as long as we have children who want to live at home together with us. We have kids whose daily lives are in Aarhus, and we decided to have a base there so we could spend more time with them instead of just at weekends.

It’s a new build flat, and we’ve never lived in one before, so my task is to inject some soul into it and make it into a nice home. I’m looking forward to more Aarhus time and spring along the harbour.

3.

My mother-in-law has her birthday in May, and she deserves a celebration because she’s such an amazing person. She simply can’t get enough love from here. I’ve been so fortunate to have such a super nice mother-in-law who I enjoy spending time with – no matter what state of mind I’m in.

She’s such a positive person, so loving and generous and inclusive (so is my father-in-law, but it’s not his birthday yet...). She’s a huge help when it comes to the kids, and even though they live in Western Jutland, they are incredibly close to our children and place a high priority on them.

Alfred often FaceTimes with them and can already say the words ‘Gran’ and ‘Grandpa’. So we’re pampering her and celebrating her in May.

4.

I’m also looking forward to chairing the Rudolph Care board meeting in May.

I’m on maternity leave now and a bit further removed from the day-to-day workings of the company than usual, and that’s how it should be. And it’s succeeding because we planned my months away from the business very well, and I have an excellent team that I can rely on. They are enormously capable, cooperate like a dream and have good chemistry together – that’s what allows me to be away from daily operations and management with peace of mind.

Board meetings are always a summary of where we are at that point in time and how we’re doing, and we discuss all aspects of the business from development to production, events, marketing, and future strategy. And I’m really looking forward to it.

5.

The 2017 Copenhagen Fashion Summit is on 11 May, and I’m going to be part of it. It is an international summit meeting for the fashion industry and sustainability is at the top of the agenda.

I’ve participated every year that a summit has been held, and I find them incredibly inspiring. Although it’s a fashion event, I think that the discussions about sustainable consumption, transparency in manufacturing and future technology are just as relevant for the beauty industry.

It’s also a great way to shine a light on Rudolph Care’s own goals and visions, and to refresh our ‘higher purpose’. That means our intention and vision that extends beyond creating lovely skincare products. Because even though we’re doing a good job, there are plenty of areas where we can improve. Such as in terms of waste and packaging and recyclability.

Copenhagen Fashion Summit always has great international speakers that inspire me, and who are relevant for me and for Rudolph Care. So it’s a day that I’m looking forward to.

6.

If everything comes together and we can find the time, I’m considering taking a short break somewhere with my husband and the youngest baby. Maybe Spain or Italy. That is, if I can tear myself away from Denmark in May.

Alfred can do without us for a few days, but the baby is too small to stay home and he’s so easy to travel with that it seems like an adult trip. He sleeps well anywhere, and that creates some tranquillity and time for the two of us.

You still need to be lovers amidst all the parent stuff and practical matters that come with having so many children. But we’ll have to see what happens...

Love, Andrea ♥
